This is Hana, a 12-year old Karafuto Ken (Sakhalin Husky). She, along with her brother (same litter), Kuma, is one of two purebred Karafutos remaining in Japan. She belongs to legendary Japanese dogsled racer Abe Isami, who would have liked for her to spend a portion of her younger life in a zoo where Japanese children could visit her and learn about this disappearing breed. At 12, her health is fragile and the opportune time for such a project is long gone. The two best-known Karafuto Ken, brothers Taro and Jiro, are household names in Japan. They survived for over a year without any human help in Antarctica. Despite Taro and Jiro's enduring fame, this breed of dog faces imminent extinction.
