Судно обойдет континент и пересечет Индийский океан, чтобы добраться до места работы. Более короткий Северный морской путь сейчас практически закрыт: зимой там могут пройти только атомоходы. Недалеко от Сахалина "Витус Беринг" будет обслуживать буровые установки. Длина — более ста метров, ширина — около двадцати. Справляться с этой махиной придется всего двадцати двум морякам. Экипаж набирали на Дальнем Востоке. Большинство, как, собственно, и сам капитан, хорошо знают конструкцию ледокола -- работали на похожем. Но "Витус Беринг" принципиально отличается от своих собратьев. "Это уникальное судно строилось с учетом недостатков, выявленных при эксплуатации предыдущих ледоколов, — говорит капитан Сергей Захаров. — Скорее всего, на нем будет проще работать". Четыре дизель-генератора вместо трех: это значит, что судно может не останавливаться на ремонт. Заниматься этим будут прямо на ходу. Поражает и маневренность: ледокол-снабженец может в прямом смысле слова замереть на месте. Все благодаря так называемым "азиподам" или винторулевым комплексам, вращающимся на 360 градусов. "Общая мощность двух азиподов — 12 мегаватт, — рассказывает Михаил Тимошин, третий механик. — Это позволяет судну двигаться во льдах толщиной до 1,7 метра со скоростью до 7 узлов".
